United are being tipped to move for two freshly-crowned world champions in a high-profile double coup.
Although Italy restored some national pride by winning the World Cup, a cloud still hangs over Serie A with Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio all facing possible relegation over allegations of bribery.
Such stern action could spark an exodus of stars from Italy, and United have been linked with a swoop for Milan midfielders Andrea Pirlo and Rino Gattuso.
Hargreaves joins the list of top stars linked with moves to Old Trafford, with Juan Roman Riquelme, Michael Carrick and Franck Ribery among those mentioned.
