The Daily Mail claims United are about to launch an audacious bid for former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira.
The French international may end up leaving Italy if current club Juventus are relegated over allegations of bribery, and Sir Alex Ferguson is tipped to sign Vieira after coming close to doing so in the past.
Juve, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio all face potential punishment, and United may also take further advantage of the situation with a double swoop for Milan midfielders Andrea Pirlo and Rino Gattuso, according to the tabloids.
Meanwhile, Owen Hargreaves is prominent on the list of top stars linked to Old Trafford, with Michael Carrick and Franck Ribery also mentioned.
