MANCHESTER UNITED
VAN DER SAR — STRENGTH: Giant 6ft 5in Dutch keeper uses all of his height to be a world-class shot-stopper.
WEAKNESS: Struggles at times to control his kicking game, and that can put his defenders under tremendous pressure if closed down. 7
BROWN — STRENGTH: One of the most improved players of the season, his fierce tackling has been vital.
WEAKNESS: Just when you think he has truly elevated his game to the next level, he will get caught out of position. 7
VIDIC — STRENGTH: Few braver defenders around and it earned him a kick in the face when the sides last met at Stamford Bridge.
WEAKNESS: His concussion against Chelsea means he goes into the final having played only 90 minutes in almost four weeks. 7
FERDINAND — STRENGTH: Reads the game as well as anyone in the world and has matured into one of the truly classy defenders who is comfortable on the ball.
WEAKNESS: Sometimes prone to lapses of concentration — and that is something which has blighted his game all the way back to West Ham’s youth side. 8
EVRA — STRENGTH: Terrific pace means the French left-back is as dangerous in attack as he is strong in defence.
WEAKNESS: Standing at only 5ft 8in, his inability to challenge for the high balls can leave him vulnerable to long-ball sides. 8
HARGREAVES — STRENGTH: Bought at no small cost — ?7million — to add energy to the United midfield and he has not disappointed, covering every blade of grass every game.
WEAKNESS: Needs to sharpen up his passing as too many times the final ball lets him down and snuffs out an attacking chance. 8
SCHOLES — STRENGTH: Acknowledged as the undisputed king of the United squad, his technique is world-class, inspiring those around him.
WEAKNESS: Has a nasty habit of making a rash early challenge that earns a caution and restricts his defensive effectiveness. 7
CARRICK — STRENGTH: Has uncanny ability to spot the pass wherever he is on the pitch — whether it’s the short ball or the raking 45-yard diagonal.
WEAKNESS: Needs to keep play in front of him because the England midfielder lacks pace. 7
RONALDO — STRENGTH: Has incredible pace, amazing trickery, a devastating eye for goal (44 this season), never stops running — he has the lot.
WEAKNESS: Wink at Portuguese bench during 2006 World Cup. 10
ROONEY — STRENGTH: The England striker is quicker than he is given credit for. Also possesses amazing skill on the ball in and around the box.
WEAKNESS: That famous Scouse temperament has got him into far too much trouble. 9
TEVEZ — STRENGTH: The newest weapon in United’s box has displayed terrific timing all season, with his running, passing and, of course, his goalscoring.
WEAKNESS: A successful Tevez tackle is a real collector’s item but the Argentine was not bought for his defensive abilities. 8
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CHELSEA
CECH — STRENGTH: Best shot-stopper in the top flight and is rarely beaten from outside the area. Has let in only 15 league goals all season.
WEAKNESS: Not as commanding as before his serious head injury. The Czech star has shown tendency to flap at crosses under pressure. 8
ESSIEN — STRENGTH: Amazing stamina and is the real dynamo of the Chelsea side, whether in midfield or at right-back.
WEAKNESS: Does not score enough from midfield, hitting only six all term — though his strike at Everton in April kept them in title race. 7
TERRY — STRENGTH: True leader of Chelsea. Skippers the side by example and has amazing strength. Terry will defy a dislocated elbow to play in the final.
WEAKNESS: Lacks pace, which can see him struggling to stay goal-side. Must also work on distribution. 9
CARVALHO — STRENGTH: Reads the game well and forges one half of the top flight’s best central defensive partnership. Great on the deck.
WEAKNESS: Can let himself down with momentary lapses in concentration that see holes open up in the Blues’ backline. 7
A COLE — STRENGTH: Terrific pace gets him out of a jam and makes him dangerous on the overlap down the left.
WEAKNESS: Quickness and strong tackling can be let down by his lack of aerial ability. Uncomfortable if ball not played to feet. 7
MAKELELE — STRENGTH: There can be few tacklers in Europe as sharp and hard as this veteran Frenchman — as Ashley Cole discovered to his cost yesterday.
WEAKNESS: Has been forced to rely more on his brain than his legs these days as his pace is fading away. 7
LAMPARD — STRENGTH: One of Europe’s deadliest midfielders. He has netted 21 goals this term, including four in a game against Derby.
WEAKNESS: Hardly the quickest of midfielders but his tackling lets him down most. Relies on Essien and Makelele to do the dirty work. 8
BALLACK — STRENGTH: The German skipper has finally settled at the club. He is now displaying the vast experience and world-class ability that persuaded the Blues to sign him.
WEAKNESS: Can frustrate with a wayward final ball, causing dangerous moves to break down. 8
J COLE — STRENGTH: Sublime skills with both feet have kept Cole in the public eye since his school days.
WEAKNESS: Sometimes forgets defensive duties, which has earned him a ticking-off from just about every boss he has played for. 7
MALOUDA — STRENGTH: Pacy winger has the ability to leave defenders for dead and also has a devastating left foot to go with it.
WEAKNESS: Does not find it hard to get himself into some dangerous positions — but all too often fails to deliver the telling cross. 7
DROGBA — STRENGTH: Fast, talented, deadly in front of goal. And strength gives defenders nightmares.
WEAKNESS: For someone so strong physically, Drogba has developed a reputation for hitting the dirt far too easily. 9作者: satanly 时间: 2008-5-21 20:53
