CONGRATULATIONS this morning to Rafa Benitez, Arsene Wenger and Roman Abramovich.
You’ve handed the title to Manchester United.
If there was a season when Alex Ferguson might have expected one or other of his Big Four rivals to have nicked it themselves it was this one.
United have been there for the taking for some time.
Fatigue, injury, loss of form and a campaign fought on five different fronts have all made United vulnerable.
And what happens this week? Liverpool and Chelsea throw it away while United do what they are best at when they’re struggling — just enough.
So a vital three points for Ferguson while their two closest rivals fritter them away at Anfield and Stamford Bridge.
As they have been doing all season.
If you want to be Premier League champions, you have to win your home games. It’s a basic premise of success.
You have to have the guile and ability to get round teams sent out with the express purpose of stopping you play.
And the perseverance and guts to see it through to the end when things are going against you.
The fear of failure on their own turf has, at times, become a neurosis for Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.
Liverpool, though unbeaten, have still dropped 14 points at Anfield.
Chelsea have given up a staggering 18 at Stamford Bridge and Arsenal 16 at The Emirates.
United? Just five at Old Trafford.
The points tallies for home games are United (43), Liverpool (37), Chelsea (33), Arsenal (32).
Worst of all are fifth-placed Aston Villa who have dropped an astonishing 27 points out of a possible 51.
And there hangs the tale of the season.
For Liverpool, it’s been a campaign of enormous highs and frustrating lows.
Never more so than when a defence that had only conceded eight goals in 16 games at Anfield let in half of that total again in one match against Arsenal.
The closer Liverpool get to the Holy Grail of a first title in 19 years, the more they buckle under the pressure. Tension pours down from the stands and turns perfectly rational performers into basket-cases.
It even got to Jamie Carragher on Tuesday night, for God’s sake.
As for Chelsea, as soon as Liverpool ended their long, unbeaten home run, the dam broke.
Suddenly enormous holes appeared in the very foundations of a defence that had resisted everything thrown at it for four years or so.
The air of uncertainty was hardly helped by Abramovich turning over three managers in 10 months.
And then soon on to a fourth and now probably a fifth. And then Arsenal, who were out of the title race before they had even got into it following the huge psychological damage of a 2-1 home defeat by Hull.
Despite their late flourish, Arsene Wenger’s refusal to bring in a new centre-half who is as composed on the ball as he is under pressure remains the most glaring omission of all in a team that has several weak vertebrae in its spine. Until Liverpool overcome their mental block, until Chelsea acquire managerial stability and until Arsenal purchase the players they require, United will remain top of the tree.
This season it has probably come as no more pleasant a surprise to anyone than Ferguson himself.作者: 鸟人只爱夕夏 时间: 2009-4-24 23:12
