Real Madrid have upped their wage offer to Cristiano Ronaldo by 50 per cent and would make him the world’s highest-paid footballer on an incredible £300,000-a-week salary after tax.
The astonishing £15m-a-year contract is the real reason why Ronaldo’s head has been turned by Madrid in recent days. The five-year contract on the table is worth a mind-boggling £75m – after tax.
The deal is a once-in-a-lifetime offer that any player would find virtually impossible to turn down. Real have also made it clear that the huge offer will not be on the table in a year’s time.
It is now or never if Ronaldo wants to move to Madrid.

Real president Ramon Calderon
Real have reminded the player that they made a £10m-a-year offer to Kaka to quit Milan last summer. The then world player of the year turned them down and they have not come knocking on his door this time.
They want Ronaldo now – or next summer it could be another emerging world superstar.
Ronaldo’s international boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has discussed the offer with his player at Portugal’s training base and advised him to take it.
The first offer to Ronaldo was already remarkable. The Daily Express broke the story last week, revealing that Ronaldo had been tempted by £185,000-a-week.
Since then, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has blown his top, United have threatened to take Real to FIFA for an illegal approach and issued an official statement warning the Spanish to back off.
Real realise the magnitude of the decision being thrust upon Ronaldo, with Ferguson going as far as saying that the club’s owners, the Glazers, would rather let Ronaldo rot in the reserves than be forced to sell.
Real have come back to the negotiating table with a renewed offer to the player, but there can be little doubt that he risks losing the biggest contract football has ever seen if he tries to put it off for a year.
Ronaldo promised a decision on his future in “three or four days” at the end of last week, but it has been delayed while the fine print of the revised and much-improved contract offer has been finalised.
Ronaldo can earn the staggering amount with an increased share of his image rights that Real have offered.
David Beckham sold a record number of Real shirts to earn the club £25m a year in extra income after his move from United. They believe that Ronaldo would be even bigger in terms of merchandising income, principally through shirt sales.
Real president Ramon Calderon says the Spanish giants have the money to buy Ronaldo. The wages and image rights deals can be absorbed by the club as Ronaldo generates the income to pay for himself.
The club would also have to offer United enough to entice them to back down from their current stance of Ronaldo not being for sale ‘at any price’.
The transfer fee would certainly go well beyond the £46m Real paid Juventus for Zinedine Zidane seven years ago. In fact, United believe that if they did ever quote a price, it would be too high even for Madrid.
Yet Calderon claims no price is too high for the player widely regarded as the best in the world. “What I have always said is that this club wants its money to be on the pitch, not in the bank,” said Calderon.
“Nothing is expensive or cheap on its own. The counter-balance is what you receive for the price you pay. They know what we earn and it is made public that Madrid has it. Last year we made signings that looked expensive but now they look cheap.”
Real have perfected the art of double talk. In one breath the Real president tried to quell United’s anger in the persistent row over the approach for Ronaldo. Calderon said that the Spanish champions did not want “to enter into conflict” and would not make an approach as long as United did not want to sell.
“We’re not going to do anything against the wishes of a friend like Manchester,” Calderon said in response to United’s formal ‘hands off’ statement last week.
Yet Calderon added: “We’re sorry that Manchester are unhappy, but Real have nothing to do with this affair. We know Manchester are not selling, so why would we persist? It’s a problem between the player and the club.”
That latter part is the key phrase. Calderon is waiting for a public declaration from Ronaldo and United suspect that may well be coming but with unwelcome consequences.
